We talked about how we can be an ethical philosopher, and the best way to do that.
We’re joined by bioethics expert Michael D. Stein, author of Bioethnography, and author and columnist for Slate.
Michael, you’re a biohacker.
How does one become an ethical hacker?
What’s your best advice?
Michael: First of all, if you want to become an ethicist, there’s a really great way to become one.
You can study ethics and get a degree in philosophy.
If you want a career in bioethnicity, there are a few things you should know: you need to have an ethical system in place, you need an ethics degree, you have to do ethics research.
I’ve written about how to do this on the Bioethicists Guide to Ethics, and this is the kind of thing that can be done through an internship or through a job at a large corporation.
If it’s not in your life, you can just start an online organization, a bio-ethics think tank.
That’s an ethical think tank that has been set up to do some work, and if you’re an ethical thinker, you are going to find the best work, but it’s still going to be going through some work.
If they say, we’re going to do an internship, or a job, it’s going to cost you about $300,000.
So you’re going from one path to the other.
I like to think of myself as a neuroscientist, a physicist, a mathematician, and then eventually an ethicist.
And that’s what I’m doing right now.
What I do is I’m going through an ethical process.
If someone asks me, “Why do you do what you do?”
I’ll tell them that it’s because it’s the only way I know how to be ethical.
That means I can’t be a jerk or an asshole.
If that’s not true, I’m not an ethical person.
But I can learn about how the world works.
If somebody comes to me, like, “You know, I’ve been thinking about doing this, and I’m very frustrated with what I’ve seen and heard,” I’m really interested in trying to understand that.
It’s very important to understand the world in which we live.
That way, if somebody tells me, I have to change my way of doing things, I can do that, too.
What if I get stuck?
Then I’m an ethical hypocrite.
What about people who are not ethical?
They don’t want to be there?
They think they’re not moral.
You’re not the moral person you think you are, because you’re not in the right frame of mind.
Michael: I would say if you have an idea that’s a bit different than what’s being taught in your college, it should be considered ethical.
You don’t have to have it and teach it, but you have a responsibility to have the knowledge in order to make a change in your own life.
If people think it’s morally acceptable to make that change, it will be okay to do it.
If not, it’ll be really difficult.
There are people who want to do a bad thing, and they can be a very dangerous person.
I’m a good example of one of these people, because I was on trial for making a false rape accusation.
It was a really serious accusation, and so I didn’t want the whole thing to be public.
My lawyer was really trying to convince me that it was OK to make the false accusation, that it wasn’t a crime, that if I told the truth, I wouldn’t have done it.
And I didn to say anything to the effect that I was being accused of.
I said, “I’m not being accused, I didn and I won’t.”
And I was very embarrassed and upset about it.
I felt that I should have told the whole truth.
And so I was in jail for six months.
There was a very strong feeling of shame and guilt, but I felt like I should not have said anything because it was against the law.
The same thing happens with the death penalty.
If there is a death penalty, it is a very sad thing to see someone put to death.
That happens, and there are people that do it because they feel like they can’t live with themselves, because they’re too scared.
The death penalty is a horrible thing.
People should know that it is wrong.
I don’t think it should happen.
Michael D.: I’m sure it’s wrong.
That can be very frustrating, because people don’t understand the harm it does.
They say, “Oh, it has to be wrong.”
